Diet for pancreatitis

cooking vegetables for pancreatitis

Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) is a disease characterized by a severe pain syndrome, which brings severe suffering to the patient. In addition to the obvious pain, the body also experiences unpleasant changes associated with impaired pancreatic function and often leads to obesity. The problem is that enzymes secreted by the pancreas, under normal circumstances, contribute to the digestion and assimilation in the intestine of proteins, fats and carbohydrates included with food, and its hormones regulate blood glucose levels. Disruption in the work of the pancreas causes hyperactivation of enzymes, which suddenly become aggressive towards the environment and initiate destructive actions.

Pancreatitis is a disease that always appears unexpectedly: the first attack occurs when the pancreas begins to attack its own enzymes. Acute manifestations of the disease are removed fairly quickly, but there is always a risk of slow disease and diagnosis of chronic pancreatitis.

The main thing in the treatment of pancreatitis is diet.

The most basic condition in the treatment of diseases such as pancreatitis is a mandatory diet. The first time after an acute attack (2-3 days), it is recommended to refuse food altogether and starve. It should be remembered here that the body usually "knows" itself that it has to wait with food, and therefore, patients with acute pancreatitis rarely have an appetite.

Starvation for a few days is only necessary for the affected pancreas, first of all, to keep it at rest - during eating, it releases enzymes into this organ needed to digest food that has entered the stomach, but the same enzymes behave aggressively. causing inflammation and pain. This condition is comparable, for example, to a broken leg: in order for the bones and tissues of the injured leg to heal, complete rest is given with the aid of a plaster, while it is forbidden to step on it. The only thing allowed is the use of warm alkaline mineral water without gas.

A state of complete rest of the pancreas in relapse and at least relative in chronic form is a prerequisite for the onset of stable deterioration. Therefore, the diet for pancreatitis is not only an effective method of therapy, but also the main rule for the prevention of exacerbation of the disease, and, as a consequence, the inhibition of its further development.

Dietary features for pancreatitis (table number 5)

The diet for pancreatitis begins no earlier than the fourth day (before that, only complete starvation). According to the generally accepted dietary classification, used in medical institutions, the diet for pancreatitis is diet No. 5. Food should be taken in small portions 5-6 times a day, excluding snacks between main meals.

The essence of the diet is the rejection of all foods that increase the formation of acid in the stomach and provoke the active work of pancreatic enzymes. Once the disease worsens, doctors strongly recommend that you follow a diet for a long time - at least 8 months. But this does not mean that after "torturing" these months with a rather difficult diet, on the ninth should stop and fully compensate for the lost opportunities.

The diet for chronic pancreatitis is a specific food culture that enters a patient’s life for a long time. Naturally, it is sometimes very difficult to let go of a lot of forbidden foods and favorite dishes, but memories of the painful pain in the stomach help to eat properly and not succumb to temptation. However, a small portion of harmful products can cause an acute attack, which should be removed in the hospital.

A patient with pancreatitis should eat food prepared according to the principle of "mechanical avoidance" of the digestive organs: it is better to cook steamed food or, in extreme cases, boiled, use it in mashed or chopped form. No frying, grilling, smoking, grinding. Fats that have undergone heat treatment will also harm the pancreas, so any type of oil - butter and vegetable - should be added cold to the finished dish.
